10 Must-Haves for Your Private Practice Therapy Office
Creating the perfect therapy office is key to providing a comfortable and supportive environment for your clients. In this post, I'll share my 10 must-haves for a private practice therapy office that will make your space both inviting and functional.
Setting up my own office was a highlight of starting my private practice. The positive feedback from my clients and even passersby has shown me how important a thoughtfully designed space can be. That being said it can be hard to know what is truly essential to have in your space, these are the 10 things (other than places to sit) that I have found are a MUST in mt therapy space:
1.Air Purifier
An air purifier ensures your office has clean, fresh air, which can help create a healthy and inviting space. Clean air can reduce allergens and improve overall air quality, making your office more comfortable for clients, especially those with allergies or sensitivities. I have also found that they work far better than a noise machine at cutting out ambient noise from outside/or office mates.
Tips : Choose a purifier with a HEPA filter for the best results.

2. White Noise Machine
A white noise machine helps to maintain privacy and minimize distractions. It masks external sounds, ensuring that conversations remain confidential and clients can focus without interruptions. The white noise machine I use has been a game-changer for maintaining privacy in my shared office building. I also find that having 2 or 3 on hand and strategically placing them can ensure privacy. Clients also tend to find the noise soothing.
Tip: Place the machine near the door or a common wall to block out noise effectively.

3. Warm Lighting
Warm lighting creates a cozy and inviting atmosphere. Soft, warm lighting can help clients feel more relaxed and comfortable compared to harsh, fluorescent lights. Switching to warm lighting made my office feel much more welcoming, and clients often comment on how cozy it feels.
Tip: Use lamps with warm-toned bulbs instead of overhead fluorescent lighting. Florescent lighting can send your sensitive clients into high activation.

4. A Blanket
A blanket can provide physical comfort and a sense of security. Some clients may feel chilly or seek comfort during sessions; a soft blanket can offer warmth and a soothing touch. Having a cozy blanket available has been appreciated by many clients, especially during longer sessions, or when you don’t have control over the summer AC!
Tip: Choose a blanket that is soft and easy to clean.

5. Tissues
Tissues are a must-have for any therapy office. (Obviously!) They provide a practical and compassionate way to handle tears, which can be a common part of the therapeutic process. Keeping a box of soft tissues within reach shows clients that you anticipate their needs and care about their comfort.
Tip: Place tissues within easy reach of both you and your client.
Bonus Tip: Buy a cute tissue holder! Like this one:
6. Trash Can
Going off the above point - clients need a place to put those snotty tissues! A discreet trash can helps keep my office neat without drawing attention.

7. Clock
A clock helps manage time effectively during sessions. It allows you to keep track of time without disrupting the flow of the session. Having a clock in view has helped me manage sessions smoothly, ensuring we stay on track.
Tip: Place the clock where you can easily see it without making it too obvious to the client.

8. Throw Pillow
A throw pillow adds a touch of comfort and style. It can provide extra support and comfort for clients, making your seating area feel more inviting. I also find that clients like to hug them while talking about difficult subjects.
Tip: Choose pillows that are cozy and not too oversized.
Here are some throw pillows that have been a hit in my office:
9. Fidgets
Fidgets can help clients focus and manage anxiety. Providing fidget tools can help clients who need to keep their hands busy, aiding in concentration and reducing anxiety. Many of my clients, young adult old, find fidgets helpful, especially during intense discussions. They are a great regulation tool and I even use them myself when with clients sometimes.
Tip: Offer a variety of fidgets to cater to different sensory preferences.

10. Pen and Paper Pad
Therapists tend to love or hate taking notes in sessions. I’m not here to debate! This pen and paper is for your clients. Clients often ask if they can write things down during sessions. I like to have them at the ready for them if they request it.
Tip: Keep a few pads and pens within easy reach for both you and your clients.
